News from our chaplaincies

* Paris CDG are excited to welcome a new chaplain to the team, Ilena Hatton, daughter of Anniel Hatton who was a chaplain at Orly until her retirement. We apologise for the incorrect spelling of Ilena’s name in the August Newsletter but again say how please we are to welcome her to airport chaplaincy.

* Stansted Airport has also been very pleased to welcome a new chaplain. The Rev Rod Reid has joined their team. We extend to him a very warm welcome and look forward to the time that we can meet him in person. Maybe at the London Conference next year.

* As mentioned in the August Newsletter, work is underway to establish a chaplaincy at Launcestan Airport in Tasmania, Australia. Gus Yearsley from Hobart Airport is leading the team to find and train a chaplain to take up the position. This is great news for the development of more chaplaincies in Australia.

* Howie Adan wrote from Amsterdam where he is now living. He hopes and trust you are all well and staying healthy. He finished at Heathrow last October and has been taking a purposed ‘breather’ from all things airport chaplaincy. Recently he returned to LHR for a proper farewell in the new Runway Bar at the Hilton, 14 floors up in the middle of the airport. Howie has begun work as a consultant for Kenyon International, and is looking forward to being more involved with their world-wide emergency response activities. Maybe one day he might end up back at an airport. He is looking forward to reconnecting with the aiport chaplaincy community.

New Lead Chaplain at LHR

New Lead Anglican Chaplain for Heathrow Airport in partnership with the Diocese of London

The Revd Bruce Rickards was licensed  as the Lead Anglican Chaplain to Heathrow Airport by the Archdeacon of Northolt The Venerable Catherine Pickford on  Friday 10 September.  In an uplifting service, conducted  outside in the Airport chapel garden, there was the formality of the historic Licence and canonical vows interspersed with music provided by the band of the Salvation Army and rousing hymns sung with great enthusiasm. The Archdeacon preached and outlined the vital ministry that Chaplains undertake and how they meet people at their point of need.

News from our Chaplaincies

In the Tampa Interfaith Chapel at Tampa International Airport are small cards with information on services and its location. On the other side of the card is the following “Travellers Prayer”

“Oh Lord God who rules the air, land and sea; preserve and protect those who travel. Grant them safe journeys to their destinations and be with those who make their journeys possible.”

(Does your chaplaincy have any such travellers prayers that you are willing to share with other chaplains? It would be wonderful to build a collection available on our website. If you can help please mailto:secretary@iacac.aero)

President’s Letter | August 2021

Dear friends and colleagues,

It’s been too long since we last met!

It seems to me that I’ve been repeating that phrase for the past 2 months. Meeting friends and family for the summer holidays or airport staff that had been furloughed for 12 to 15 months has been such a joy and made me realize once more how much we need to see and meet each other. Then, those past days Facebook has been starting to remind me of fond memories of our conference in Paris in late August 2016. I already anticipate within the next few days and weeks the memories from Charlotte in 2018 and Stockholm in 2017, then will come those from New York in 2015 and Melbourne in 2019. My Facebook will not search beyond as I wasn’t on it before 2015 but I’m sure that for many of you more memories will remind you of so many past conferences, friendly faces and new encounters.
